College of Nursing, Yonsei University, Korea RIHHHPC.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explain differences of cesarean section rates according to San-Yin-Jiao(SP6) acupressure for women in labor.

METHOD: A nonequivalent control group pre test–post test design was used to explain differences of cesarean section rates according to SP6 acupressure. The participants were 209 women who were assigned to one of three groups SP6 acupressure(n=86), SP6 touch(n=47), and control group(n=76). For 30 minutes, the SP6 acupressure group received SP6 acupressure, and the SP6 touch group received SP6 touch for the duration of each uterine contraction. The Control group was encouraged to deep breath and relax for the duration of each uterine contraction for 30 minutes.

RESULT: The rates of cesarean section were 12.8%, 29.8%, and 22.4% for the SP6 acupressure group, SP6 touch group, and control group respectively. There was a significant difference among groups (p=0.049). Cesarean section rates were significantly different between the SP6 acupressure and non-SP6 acupressure group(p=0.035).

CONCLUSION: This finding shows that 30 minutes of SP6 acupressure was effective in decreasing the cesarean section rate. Therefore, SP6 acupressure during labor could be applied as an effective nursing intervention.

Effects of SP6 Acupressure on Labor Pain and Length of Delivery Time in Women During Labor

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of SP6 acupressure on labor pain and delivery time in women in labor.

Design: Randomized clinical trial

Setting/location: Delivery room in a university hospital

Participants: Seventy-five (75) women in labor were randomly assigned to either the SP6 acupressure (n = 36) or SP6 touch control (n = 39) group. The participants were matched according to parity, cervical dilation, labor stage, rupture of amniotic membrane, and husband’s presence during labor. There were no additional oxytocin augmentation or administration of analgesics during the study period.

Intervention: The 30-minute acupressure or touch on SP6 acupoint was performed.

Outcome measures: Labor pain was measured four times using a structured questionnaire, a subjective labor pain scale (visual-analogue scale [VAS]): before intervention, immediately after the intervention, and 30 and 60 minutes after the intervention. Length of delivery time was calculated in two stages: from 3 cm cervical dilation to full cervical dilatation, and full cervical dilatation to the delivery.

Results: There were significant differences between the groups in subjective labor pain scores at all time points following the intervention: immediately after the intervention (p = 0.012); 30 minutes after the intervention (p = 0.021); and 60 minutes after the intervention (p = 0.012). The total labor time (3 cm dilatation to delivery) was significantly shorter in the SP6 acupressure intervention group than in the control group (p = 0.006).

Conclusions: These findings showed that SP6 acupressure was effective for decreasing labor pain and shortening the length of delivery time. SP6 acupressure can be an effective nursing management for women in labor.

Labor Acupressure – Safe and Natural Way to Avoid Risks of Medical Labor Inductions June 20, 2008

How to Avoid Risks of Medical Labor Inductions?

Labor Acupressure – safe and natural way to avoid risks of medical labor inductions! Maternity acupressure or labor acupressure is the best medically proven safe and natural way to avoid risks of medical inductions among all the ways to induce labor naturally. Labor acupressure can be used for natural labor induction as well as to find labor pain relief.

Avoid Risks of Medical Labor Inductions if Medically Possible

You may know that you should avoid medical labor induction if possible for the health of your baby and yourself. Many medications used to begin labor have risks and side effects to your baby and yourself. Furthermore, medical labor inductions could still take days for labor to start and sometimes may not work.

You should consult your gynecologist or obstetrician about medical labor inductions and the risks and side effects of the medications. You should be aware that the choices you make about drugs during labor induction will affect your baby, just like the choices you make about drugs during pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises that labor should be induced only when it is more risky for the baby to remain inside the mother’s uterus or womb than to be born. Therefore, medical labor induction should only be administered for medical reasons or as an emergency as a last resort.

Avoid Risks of Medical Labor Inductions

The dangers and risks of medical labor induction include the following.

  • Medical induction may not work
  • Can cause very strong contractions that sometimes do not dilate the cervix
  • Pain levels much higher than that of a spontaneous labor
  • Stronger contractions may cause fetal or maternal distress
  • Higher risk of a cesarean section
  • Fetal and neonatal bradycardia
  • Fetal and maternal death
  • Uterine tetany
  • Uterine rupture
  • Severe postpartum hemmhorage
  • Decreased uteroplacental blood flow
  • Amniotic fluid embolism
  • Necessitating hysterectomy
  • Risk of infection
  • Some drugs are not FDA approved (Misoprostol/Cytotec)

Natural Ways to Avoid Risks of Medical Labor Inductions

There are many alternative natural methods for inducing labor that do not have these kinds of medical risks or side effects. Natural ways to induce labor include acupressure pressure points to induce labor, herbs for inducing labor like Blue Cohosh and Black Cohosh, cumin tea, red raspberry leaf tea, pineapple, evening primrose oil, using castor oil to induce labor, nipple stimulation or even having sex or making love to start labor, eating spicy food to begin labor, applying massage to induce labor, exercise and relaxation and other natural remedies.

But not all these natural induction methods are completely safe.

For example, Blue Cohosh and Black Cohosh have been strongly linked to serious bleeding during labor and cardiac problems in newborn babies. Nipple stimulation causes the release of oxytocin, which can bring on labor contractions. However stimulating the nipples has a risk of over-stimulating the uterus. Castor oil sometimes causes diarrhea which continues throughout the whole delivery.
